Easy Company: Crossroads
This is a stitched panorama of the memorial at the location known as the "island" in the Netherland. This area was a 5-kilometer-wide "island" that lay between the Lower Rhine on the north and the Waal River on the south. The cities of Arnhem, on the Lower Rhine, and Nijmegen, on the Waal, marked the eastern limit of the 101st's lines; the small towns of Opheusden on the Lower Rhine and Dodewaard on the Waal were the western limit. The Germans held the territory north of the Lower Rhine and west of the Opheusden-Dodewaard line. At this location Easy Company destroyed two companies of SS in a surprise attack on their position. While doing this only on soldier lost his life: Sgt William Dukeman. In honor of both Sgt William Dukeman and Easy Company this momument was erected thanks to Bernie van Doorn and Rijacco Hoogendoorn. As of Januari 2011 this monument was damaged by an unknown car and replacement is uncertain. UPDATE: it is said the memorial is going to be replaced by another version of it in either July or August 2011. I'm glad to hear that it is going to be replaced.
